It's time for Blogger's Quilt Fest - Fall 2012!

This time, I'm sharing my absolute favorite quilt I've made....so far....

I call this one Merry-go-Rounds.  (It's dark here, and I keep forgetting to take these pictures...)

It was inspired by the Blind Co-pilot Quilt by Katie.  I got the inspiration after looking at the great book she co-authored.

Background is Kona snow, triangles are red, orange, yellow, and lime green scraps.

September blocks for do.good stitches

I finished these up last weekend, but they'll be in the mail this week.

 For September, Natalie wrote up a great wonky pinwheel tutorial. 

These were fun!  It was great to be able to use so many scraps too.  I don't know that I'd have the patience to do a whole quilt, but I do love how they turned out.  I can't wait to see the finished quilt.

The project that never ended....

About three years ago...or more...my mother-in-law asked for a quilt for her bed.  They have traditional tastes, and she picked a few fabrics out of my stash so I could see her colors.  Burgundy, olive, and cream. 

A hectic work schedule, and I managed to get the top done.  It sat for about a year, while I tried to figure out how to quilt it.  It was huge!  And I was too cheap to send it out.  So, I crammed that thing through my machine.  Straight line stitching only.  And very wide apart.  

Last July, I gave it to her, and she loved it.

And then I forgot to take a picture.

So, this last month, we were back to visit....and I finally remembered to photograph the quilt.

After a journey of about three years, here's the quilt.  They love it, and use it everyday, so I'm happy!

I really didn't mean to take the summer off from blogging.  But it was so hot....it's not fun to sit next to a hot iron, covered in a quilt....

And I lost my sewing mojo.  I'm still trying to get it back.  I've got a few quilt tops done, and I'm excited about them.

And new fabric should help, right?

Scrap Organization

My scrap organization was pretty sad.  It all went into one giant basket.  I had no idea what was on the bottom of that heap.  In my defense, I didn't really like scraps...but, I also didn't like throwing out fabric....

And then I read Sunday Morning Quilts.  I loved it.  It made me want to horde all scraps, and do nothing but sew with them.  So, I started by doing some organizing.  And of course, I needed something to put all these newly organized scraps in...

Enter the fabric baskets.  It's the first project in the book.  And it's fun.  I love making improv fabric slabs now.  It's improv, but mostly squares, so it's a good compromise for me. 

I deviated from the instructions slightly.  I used canvas for the lining, so I didn't need interfacing.  I also skipped the cardboard inserts, and just tacked the corners to hold the square shapes.

I made one in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, black, and white.  Whew.  These were so fun.  It was also a great place to practice my free motion quilting, since you quilt before assembly, so you can't see the back of the quilting.  I need a lot more practice before I start in on a quilt.

If you decide to make some, I highly recommend the pattern.  Now to horde some more scraps so I can make a quilt...or is it make a quilt to get more scraps...I think this might be never ending.
