Scrap Organization

My scrap organization was pretty sad.  It all went into one giant basket.  I had no idea what was on the bottom of that heap.  In my defense, I didn't really like scraps...but, I also didn't like throwing out fabric....

And then I read Sunday Morning Quilts.  I loved it.  It made me want to horde all scraps, and do nothing but sew with them.  So, I started by doing some organizing.  And of course, I needed something to put all these newly organized scraps in...

Enter the fabric baskets.  It's the first project in the book.  And it's fun.  I love making improv fabric slabs now.  It's improv, but mostly squares, so it's a good compromise for me.

I deviated from the instructions slightly.  I used canvas for the lining, so I didn't need interfacing.  I also skipped the cardboard inserts, and just tacked the corners to hold the square shapes.

I made one in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, black, and white.  Whew.  These were so fun.  It was also a great place to practice my free motion quilting, since you quilt before assembly, so you can't see the back of the quilting.  I need a lot more practice before I start in on a quilt.

If you decide to make some, I highly recommend the pattern.  Now to horde some more scraps so I can make a quilt...or is it make a quilt to get more scraps...I think this might be never ending.

Last of the Farmer's Wife?

This is the last round of the farmer's wife...so far...

If I go any farther, I need to start using templates, and I'm not sure I'm ready for that....

I plan to lay these out in the next few days, and see if I need to make more.  I was hoping for a twin size, or a large throw for the couch.

Okay, enough back story.... here's the pretty pictures....

Handstitched!

I'm horribly behind on my homework for the handstitched class.  I'm having creative block when it comes to picking fabrics for a quilt lately.  So, I haven't even figured out what I'm doing for the main project, and I'm quickly going to be two weeks behind.

Well, I did manage to finish the needlebook project.  I love it.

Here's hoping I can pick some fabric for the quilt before I'm too far behind to catch up....

Farmer's wife

I think I have about 10 more done, and about that many cut out.  They are slowing down...I'm currently obsessing over making some fabric scrap bins, and the handstitching classwork, I'll share my finishes on those this weekend.

Farmer's Wife

Just a quick stop to share five more FWQAL.  I think I'm almost over this obsession, so we'll have to see how big of a quilt top I can make with the blocks I have done already.

June Blocks - Love Circle

I have a confession to make.

I can't make improv blocks.

I break out into cold sweats.

It's terrifying.

It got so bad, I started cutting my scraps into 2.5" squares.  If the remnant couldn't do that, it went in the trash.

I've gotten better.
I keep random size scraps.
I've attempted some improv blocks.

It still makes me nervous.

I still end up with patchwork.

Jacey requested improv blocks in citrus colors.  Sigh.

I did my best.  I did make a few extra, so hopefully they can work into all the other blocks.

They'll be in the mail by Friday.

And I can go back to a block with some order.
